Journal 1 Entry 6

If you look, there is evidence of them everywhere. They put up coded posters on the grate supports, splice their ads into the moments that the billboards change advertisers, you can even hear them talking on the street. It’s a wonder that the wasps have yet to wipe them out, but I guess it’s hard to destroy something with such deep, widespread roots.

I’ve managed to pick up a few things here and there, symbols drawn on the edges of buildings and on the sidewalks, snippets of words that fit in a conversation but only barely, said with just enough strange emphasis that it catches your attention, if you’re listening.

Do you ride the rails? Do you have your ticket? Are you taking the train?

They're all things that are feasible to ask in Satellite, given that the train system is the most effective way to get around. I don’t know what the meaning is, yet. I don’t understand the theme of the questions and I don’t want to ask Elle, I’ve told her already that I’m not interested in “getting a ticket”—whatever the hell that means. Asking questions about it would likely just get me deep into something I couldn’t get out of

It’s not that I’m not all for their cause, it’s just that the cause is unrealistic. If I wanted to pick battles I couldn’t win I’d try to get Two-Step to retire. I’d have a better chance convincing him to change the gym into a meditation studio than these people have of burning down, or reforming, or whatever it is they want to do to Satellite.

You don’t make big change in this city. If you’re lucky, you can clean up your block, if you’re damn lucky you can keep it clean.

Whatever. I guess I can’t fault them for dreaming. But sometimes their dreaming creates messes—big messes, bloody messes, and if there’s one thing I’m not, it’s a clean up crew.

Elle had better stay safe. There’s no way this resistance is as straight edge as it pretends to be. And once your ticket is punched, I'm not sure you can get off the train.
